The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee — JKJAAC welcomes the statement issued by Green Party Deputy Leader Mothin Ali, who has condemned the crackdown in Kashmir and expressed solidarity with Kashmiris at this deeply distressing time.

In his statement, Mothin Ali described the current situation in Kashmir as “deeply worrying” and said that the measures imposed on ordinary people represent a serious and disproportionate overreach. He also highlighted concerns around lockdowns, communications blackouts, arrests of protesters, and the fundamental right to peaceful protest in any democratic society.

JKJAAC appreciates his recognition of the concerns of the Kashmiri community in Britain, many of whom have been unable to contact relatives and loved ones due to communications restrictions. For families living abroad, the blackout has caused fear, uncertainty, and distress about the safety and wellbeing of people in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

JKJAAC believes that the way forward is not force, fear, blackouts, or arrests, but dialogue, de-escalation, restoration of communications, protection of civilians, medical access, and implementation of signed agreements.

We thank Mothin Ali and the Green Party for standing in solidarity with the Kashmiri people and for raising their voice in defence of civil liberties, democratic rights, and peaceful protest.

JKJAAC once again calls upon the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir to immediately end coercive measures, restore communications, release or produce detainees before courts, allow humanitarian and medical access, and begin meaningful negotiations with the JKJAAC leadership.
