The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee welcomes the important intervention by Rotherham Councillor Saghir Alam OBE, who raised the recent situation in Azad Jammu & Kashmir directly with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer MP, on Saturday, 13 June 2026.
Councillor Alam submitted a question to the Prime Minister asking what urgent diplomatic actions the British Government is taking to help ensure that the current situation in Azad Jammu & Kashmir is resolved peacefully and amicably, while promoting stability, dialogue, and the protection of affected communities.
JKJAAC appreciates this timely and principled action taken on behalf of the British Kashmiri diaspora and the people of Kashmir. At a time of serious concern, uncertainty and distress for families in AJK and overseas, such engagement with the highest levels of the UK Government is both necessary and deeply valued.
The concerns raised by Councillor Alam reflect the voice of many British Kashmiris whose families, relatives and communities have been affected by the ongoing crisis, communications restrictions, reports of violence, arrests, humanitarian concerns and the urgent need for peaceful dialogue.
JKJAAC reiterates that the people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir are seeking dignity, justice, public rights, protection of civilians, restoration of communications, medical access, release or due process for detainees, humanitarian access, and implementation of signed agreements through meaningful negotiations.
JKJAAC calls on the British Government, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and the British High Commission in Islamabad to continue engaging urgently with the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir to support de-escalation, restoration of communications, humanitarian access and a peaceful resolution.
JKJAAC also urges elected representatives across the United Kingdom to continue raising the concerns of British Kashmiris and to support diplomatic efforts aimed at protecting affected communities and preventing further escalation.
Councillor Saghir Alam OBE’s intervention demonstrates the important role that diaspora representatives and elected officials can play in ensuring that the concerns of the people of AJK are heard internationally.
JKJAAC thanks Councillor Alam for standing with the people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and for taking action on behalf of the diaspora and the people of Kashmir.
