Brussels, Belgium — The Belgian Kashmiri community has raised urgent concerns with the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) regarding what they describe as a rapidly worsening human rights situation in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK).

In a communication sent to the Subcommittee, community representatives highlighted reports of a complete shutdown of internet and communication services across AJK. International media, including the BBC, have also reported that the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC)—a broad-based civil rights movement representing the socio-economic grievances of local residents—has been banned by authorities.

Members of the Belgian Kashmiri community say these developments have caused significant distress among diaspora families in Belgium, many of whom have been unable to contact relatives in the region. They warn that the measures risk escalating tensions in an area long governed under a framework shaped by UN Security Council resolutions and internationally recognised human rights principles.

In their appeal, the community urged the Subcommittee on Human Rights to take several key actions:

Encourage the Government of Pakistan and AJK authorities to restore internet and communication services immediately.

Call for the resumption of negotiations between the Government of Pakistan and JAAC, including implementation of the 04 October 2025 agreement.

Advocate for the release of detainees arrested during peaceful demonstrations.

Support the launch of a structured, rights-based dialogue with legitimate representatives of the people of AJK.

The community emphasised that they “stand firmly for peace, justice, and democratic rights,” and called on the Subcommittee to use its influence to help prevent the use of force against peaceful demonstrators and ensure the protection of fundamental rights in the region.
